Students who are interested in learning about music theory but are not familiar with notated music should take this class. Intro to Theory and History of Music will move at a more comfortable pace than AP Theory focusing on the foundations of music reading and ear training. By the end of the year, students will be able to compose music given certain guidelines, analyze simple compositions, read and notate music on a 5-line staff, and also be able to discuss related events in music history from 1500 to the present day. This course is designed to develop the skills necessary for success if continuing on to take AP Music Theory next year. For students who are less comfortable reading music, there will be extended sections of the class dealing solely with the history of music which will have more in common with a standard history class than the theoretical notation of music. Intro to Theory and History of Music will meet for one full block every other day during the school year. This is an excellent course to pair with Mr. Celfo’s Piano or Guitar classes.
